Q1: During a recent lightning storm, the power was turned off but some instruments were still damaged. Can you explain this?
A: Lightning jumped across the single-pole switch into the instrumentation. We would recommend to use a double-pole switch. However, this does not insure that a severe lightning surge will not damage. It is depending on the insulation resistance of the switch or the size of the lightening pulse. The only sure solution is to install a surge protector in line with the power source.
Q2: Where is the best place to install an SPD?
A:Ideally, an SPD should be installed at the main service entrance as
close to the neutral-to-ground bond as possible, This will ensure that surge energies are routed to earth by the most direct path. In larger facilities where distances between this primary protection and the equipment being protected are long, it is also good practice to use distributed protection all the way to point-of-use.
